README

Welcome to my readme. The purpose of this document is to help define our working relationship. You can consider this a user guide for me.

What I Value

“Pure Positive. The more doubt and negativity you can knock out of anything the heavier it gets, the clearer it gets and the deeper it gets to those around it; it’s contagious.” – Jimi Hendrix

Failure: We are only failing if we aren’t learning from our happy little mistakes.

Direct Communication: Don’t beat around the bush. If you want to know something ask. If you want me to know something tell me.

Actions over words: Actions really do speak louder than words, nothing ever got done by saying it would over and over.

Leaders are everywhere: Leadership is “the action of leading a group of people or an organization.” Leadership cares not about your tenure, title or anything else, control definitely does but not leadership. I lead from behind as a servant leader.

Assumptions

You’re very good at your job. You wouldn’t be here if you weren’t. If it feels like I’m questioning you it’s because I’m curious. I was the kid that took the remote apart to figure out how it worked, still am.

You’ll let me know if you can’t do your job. One of my main responsibilities is ensuring that you’re setup for success. Occasionally things slip through the cracks and I won’t know I’m letting you down.

You feel safe debating with me. I find that ideas improve by being examined from all angles.

Availability & Communication

Whether in person or remote, my preferred method of communication is what works best for you. Feel free to drop time on my calendar, it is up to date and the openings are for the taking. If there is not time, reach out and I’ll make some. If it matters to you it matters to me. If its an emergency make sure to let me know immediately!

Meetings:
A meeting without an agenda and/or intended purpose saps my life force, I expect it does the same for you. If a meetings purpose is not clear, reach out and ask or just say no.

One on Ones: These meetings are sacred. It is our guaranteed time to get together and discuss what you want to discuss. It is not a status meeting unless you want it to be. If I can’t accommodate our regularly scheduled time, I will do everything I can to ensure we still meet that week.

How I can help you

Context: Most of my day is spent collecting, filtering and sharing context/information from across other projects, domains and product lines. I’ll try to push information to you as much as i can but feel free to ask about anything else.

Perspective. I won’t be working on your project day to day but will be close enough to have informed thoughts.

Celebrate. I will celebrate your successes. Please share with me when things go well, something makes you proud etc.

Firefighting: I’m always willing to jump into the trenches. To be most effective keep me in the loop early, the sooner I have context the better I can help you put out the fire.

How can you help me?

Be a good teammate. Celebrate each others successes, be open and honest with each other, we will all be better for it.

Do Amazing Work. This is the expectation. Let me know if there is something keeping you from accomplishing this.

Disagree with me. Good solutions come from healthy debate, we need to be comfortable separating ideas and egos.

Tell me if I screw up. I’m not perfect, nor do I think I am. Did I screw up and not notice? Let me know!

Your Career

I’ll do my best to provide growth and learning opportunities, we will review career progress once a month. It is up to you to take action and seize the opportunities.

Your career is yours.

You set your goals.

You set your priorities.

You manage your work.

You manage your time.
