- **WordPress performance optimization:** Most WordPress performance problems are caching problems. Before touching CDNs, databases, or PHP configuration, getting full-page caching right delivers more measurable improvement than any other single intervention — we proved this with a 72.7% speed improvement at Copyblogger without rewriting anything fundamental.
- **Engineering leadership follow-through:** The most undervalued engineering leadership skill is closing open loops. A manager who reliably follows up on every commitment — even just with a status update — builds more organizational trust than one who makes bold decisions but lets things go quiet. Most trust deficits I've seen trace back to social contracts that were made and forgotten, not bad intentions.
- **Static sites for personal publishing:** For a personal site with basic content needs, local WordPress plus static export to a CDN is strictly better than managed WordPress hosting — lower attack surface, zero server maintenance, faster globally, and cheaper. The irony is that WordPress engineers are often the last to make this switch for their own sites.
- **Smartphone notification defaults:** Default smartphone notification settings are designed for app engagement metrics, not user productivity. The highest-leverage focus intervention isn't a new tool — it's aggressively auditing which apps are allowed to interrupt you and defaulting everything else to silent.
- **WP-CLI and WordPress at scale:** WP-CLI is what made managed WordPress hosting viable as an enterprise product. Before it, operating WordPress at scale meant admin panel automation hacks or raw MySQL. WP-CLI made WordPress scriptable, auditable, and operable — it's the single tool that moved WordPress from CMS to platform.
